Recalls and NHTSA
| Manufacturers will complete recalls on their products on their own, or they may be required to by the government. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) orders many of the safety recalls on motorcycles and vehicles. They also list the manufacturers’ duties regarding these recalls. Each recall forces the manufacturer to file a public report that describes the safety related defect with a Federal motor vehicle (including motorcycles) safety standard. This report includes that vehicle and or equipment involved, the major events that determined the recall, and how the defect will be corrected and a schedule for the recall. |
| |
| Owners of the affected vehicles or motorcycles are attempted to be notified by the manufacturer as a requirement by law. Manufacturers obtain this information with current registrations and also notify the distributors of their product. You are entitled to a free correction of the flaw, even if you have not been notified. |
| |
| NHTSA provides a monthly list of all safety recalls, identifying the make and model of affected motorcycles and vehicles, along with a brief description. If you become aware of a recall, you should wait until you are notified by the manufacturer before scheduling a repair with a dealer. Recalls are very specific to certain motorcycles and vehicles, possibly down to specific serial numbers. To obtain recall information, you may visit NHTSA’s website at www.nhtsa.dot.gov. |
